Multilayer Energy Dissipating Inlet Columns for Center Feed Clarifiers increases Capacity by at least 40%
The MEDIC is an innovative EDI developed by Hydrosims first used at the Western WWTP in Melbourne, Australia. The new Energy Dissipating Inlet was verified by both model predictions and field observations as a very effective solution to the problem of strong centre influent jets that often occurred in a centre feed clarifier. The significantly reduced clarifier influent intensity and turbulence due to the MEDIC substantially delays the occurrence of dispersed sludge blanket, which is the most direct reason for clarifier operation failure.

Hydrosims' Multilayer Energy Dissipating Inlet Column (MEDIC) drastically improves effluent quality
Through radial and uniform distribution of the influent flow, impingements of the influent with the MEDIC baffles, and a large accumulative area of inlet ports, the MEDIC yields unparalleled results, proven to slow the influent velocity by over thirteen times! With such a significant improvement in performance, the MEDIC can provide significant process improvements as well as a decrease in effluent suspended solids for overloaded clarifiers. Track record of success in model-assisted recommendations for process design optimization and clarifier retrofit.
The success of our modeling projects is strongly demonstrated by the field data before and after our recommended course of action. The field data not only illustrates a state-of-the-art technology for process design optimization but also introduces several innovative clarifier retrofit alternatives which can be directly used by design engineers to substantially enhance the performance of clarifiers while maximizing cost-effectiveness.

Hydrosims, a forefront leader
Hydrosims has been a forefront leader in water and environmental modeling since the initiation of the associated technology development and application fields. The CFD-based Mass Fully Conservative Clarifier Model (MFCCM) developed by Hydrosims in the early 90s overcomes mass non-conservation, while maintaining the density impact, providing unparalleled results supported by real-world data in the industry.

Traditional EDI issues addressed by Hydrosims' Multilayer Energy Dissipating Inlet Column (MEDIC)
In order for a clarifier to be successful, a majority of the energy dissipation should occur in the EDI and not the clarifier tank. An effective EDI must both reduce the influent velocity and radially distribute the flow. Traditional EDIs do a poor job of both, resulting in fast-moving and turbulent water entering the clarifier. Hydrosims' Multilayer Energy Dissipating Inlet Column (MEDIC) addresses both issues, resulting in significant clarifier performance. Learn more from the MEDIC pages.

Multilayer Energy Dissipating Inlet Column, US Patent No. 7378027
- In center-feed clarifiers, intense center infleunt often brings significant turbulence into the settling compartment, resulting in increased ESS
- Currently operating in Denver Center Sewage Treatment Plant; and West Melbourne, Ja Ding Shanghai, and Tai Po Hong Kong WWTPs
- Velocities of Influent jet flow in center-feed clarifiers have been reduced from two feet per second to less than two inches per second upon exiting the MEDIC
